What is the history behind mounting an eagle above your shed or barn door?

We all know why we hang horse shoes, but what about those metal, or even plastic, spread-winged eagle decorations? Are they like pink flamingos and serve no real purpose? Purely decorative? It seems old school and yet you still see people with them on their barns or sheds. What is the history behind it?

I think they are supposed to scare mice away (just like scarecrows.)
Reply:I believe that the eagle represents prosperity and luck. My grandmother always used to say that When the Eagle Flies, thats when she is getting paid.
