I'm planning to visit both Bangkok and Singapore, we need help.....?

We would like to purchase electronics, home decorations, jewerly and clothes/shoes. We are unaware of which items we should buy, in which location. Also we%26#039;d love to hear any great local eateries.

I%26#039;m planning to visit both Bangkok and Singapore, we need help.....?
Clothes not much between the two.

Jewerly prob slightly Singapore

Shoes Thailand

Electronics - i have found BAngkok to be cheaper

Home Deco%26#039;s - once again Bangkok

all in all there isnt alot of diff between the two places as of last time i went to both (last year July). But would think Bangkok is certainly cheaper overall.

If you want REALLY CHEAP try Vietnam - not as much choice though but getting there

Reply:I have not shopped in Singapore so I can not tell you what%26#039;s it is like over there, although other members of my family have and they said it was a good place to shop.

However, after comparing notes about shopping, we found that shopping in Bangkok for clothes, shoes, jewelry, and home decorations is better in Bangkok. Home decorations is excellent if you go to the market such as Chatuchak weekend market or the Lumpini night bazaar (which I personally recommend as it is newer, cleaner, and slightly cooler being at night. It also has good eating place right there)

Generally - Bangkok has A LOT of places good for shopping for clothes. Go to Siam or Pratunam area in Bangkok. Also the MBK shopping centre is good for just about EVERYTHING you will ever need. Patpong and Silom road are good too. Jewelry - again, anywhere but more so in Chinatown area.

Electronics is VERY expensive in Bangkok. I found a lot of items were even more expensive than at home in Australia!! So, try Singapore for electronics.

That does not mean that Singapore is not good for shopping.

Go and have fun and enjoy the trip.

Cheers
Reply:Electronics in Thailand are MORE expensive than in the USA. Singapore and the USA have about the same price for electronics. International trade is very effective but Thailand taxes electric/electronic equipment. Thais actually drive to Cambodia to buy power tools.

Clothing can be a real bargain in Thailand. My family always loads up on our way home.

Gold chains in Thailand are sold at little above the price of the gold and can be sold back for almost as much as was paid. The ubiquitous gold shops have the buy and sell price posted on the window. The price is per baht of gold. One baht of gold is 15.2g of 23 carat gold. This is about as cheap as gold can be bought anywhere.

Gems can also be bought in Thailand for much less than in the US but unless you really know what you are doing, you are more likely to be scammed than get a bargain. Many of popular tourist scams in Thailand involve gems. Enjoy shopping but be wary and extremely skeptical. If they offer to mail your gem purchases directly to your home, it is definately a scam.

I have never shopped for anything but electronics in Singapore and have never shopped for home decorations anywhere. Sorry.

Enjoy your trip
